This year marks our 13th year of being a Toitū Net Carbonzero certified organization. We have interviewed Angela Jones, General Manager at Dove Medical Press, to discuss the organisation’s commitment to sustainability and the achievements in reducing our carbon footprint.

Q: Could you please tell us about the importance of being a Toitū Net Carbonzero certified organization and what it means for Dove Medical Press?
Angela Jones: Being a Toitū Net Carbonzero certified organization is highly important to us. It demonstrates our commitment to reducing our carbon footprint and showcases our dedication to environmental responsibility. This certification serves as a testament to our customers and employees that we are actively taking tangible steps to minimize our impact on the environment.

Q: Can you share some of the key achievements Dove Medical Press has made in reducing its carbon emissions?
Angela Jones: This year, we are celebrating our 13th year of being Toitū Net Carbonzero certified, and we have made significant progress in reducing our carbon emissions. By focusing on concrete targets to measure and manage our carbon emissions, this year our total emissions were 17.03 tCO2e, which is 62% lower than the base year total of 45.36 tCO2e. Our emissions intensity has decreased by 2.82 tCO2e/$M based on a 5-year rolling average. These achievements highlight our ongoing commitment to sustainability and the positive impact we are making.

Q: Could you tell us more about the specific actions Dove Medical Press has taken to reduce its carbon footprint?
Angela Jones: We have implemented several initiatives to minimize our carbon footprint. First, we have focused on reducing office energy consumption by implementing energy-efficient practices and technologies. We purposefully changed our lease vehicle from diesel to hybrid, and we have embarked on a successful trial of a food waste service, which has proven highly effective, leading us to integrate it into our regular operations. We have also made efforts to decrease business travel by encouraging remote working and utilizing virtual meeting platforms. Furthermore, we have wholeheartedly embraced the digitalization of our processes and systems, significantly reducing paper usage. These measures have been well-received by our employees, and we continue to explore new opportunities for sustainability improvements.

Q: Can you explain how Dove Medical Press is proactively mitigating its impacts through the purchase of carbon credits?
Angela Jones: Alongside our efforts to reduce emissions, we understand the importance of offsetting the unavoidable carbon emissions we generate. To achieve this, we proactively purchase verified carbon credits from the New Zealand Emissions Unit Register and Gold Standard Registry. By investing in these carbon credits, we contribute to projects that help offset emissions and promote sustainable practices. This approach allows us to go beyond reducing our own emissions and make a positive environmental impact beyond our organization.

Lastly, I would like to express our sincere gratitude to the Toitū Envirocare organization for their comprehensive certification program. Over the past decade, they have been invaluable in educating our business on championing the shift to a low-carbon future. Their expertise and guidance have been instrumental in our sustainability efforts, and we appreciate their ongoing support.
